Deep-Water Goosefish
This image of a deep sea anglerfish was captured by NOAA photographers during their Expedition to the Deep Slope in 2007. This species is known as a deep-water goosefish (Sladenia shaefersi). Known also as a Shaefer's anglerfish, it is a member of the angler family, and can be recognized by its bulbous brown body and the intricate color patterns on its back. This species grows to a maximum size of 28 inches (71 centimeters), and is capable of inhabiting incredible depths up to 4,000 feet (1200 meters).
