Flame Scallop
This strange mollusk is known as a flame scallop. The name comes from the bright, flame-red color of the mantle. The scallop's vibrant red color is due to large amount of carotenoids found within their body. They are found mainly in the Caribbean Sea where to grow to a length of about 3 inches (7.6 centimeters). Flame scallops have a unique escape ability when threatened by predators. They can repeatedly clap their two shells together to propel themselves through the water in a form of jet propulsion.
