Fireworm on Coral
This image of an Orange Fireworm, also known as a Bearded Fireworm, was captured by NOAA photographers in the waters of the U. S. Virgin Islands. These fireworms are usually found on reefs, under stones in rocky areas of the sea, and on some mud bottoms. Fireworms get their name from the incredibly painful sting that can be produced by the hairy bristles on the sides of their body. Fireworms are voracious predators and will eat soft and hard corals as well as other cnidarians.
